"The Half of It" had a lot of potential but the film not only failed to meet expectations but in several ways was problematic. Not to mention that the film was also "cringy" and far from cute. I felt compelled to watch "The Half of It" because the trailer had an LGBTQ Asian American woman, a character that is extremely rare or nonexistent in mainstream American media, and also seemed to explore the beauty of platonic relationships. However, the movie failed to address all three of these themes. I think this movie has the potential to be remade if the following holes are addressed.
When exploring stories of underrepresented groups such as the LGBTQ and Asian/Asian American communities, the film needs to do them justice. Some ways to give these groups justice, just at the top of my head, is to demonstrate character growth throughout the story-so that the underrepresented status is the film"s "identity" think "Call Me By Your Name" or send a call to message to the audience about standing up for these communities (think "Milk. Both of these ways also encompass stories where being gay or being Asian American isn"t the main point but still show how these identities impacted and created struggles for the subject"s life (think "Rocketman. These ways may not apply to stories with characters that are gay and/or Asian American simply for the case of having representation (think "To All the Boys I Loved Before. The Half of It" is not in the same category as "To All the Boys I Loved Before" since the trailer suggested that the plot is going to explore a love triangle with a "twist" when the main character, Ellie Chu, likes the popular girl, Aster Flores. Furthermore, the film created potential sub-plots to explore being Asian American, being gay and being platonic, yet all of these sub-plots were either left hanging or ruined the point. I will start by exploring the identity of being Asian American, which is particularly important to me as an Asian American. Throughout the story, we can see aspects of Ellie Chu"s Asian American identity, such as food and language. This is important for representing Asian Americans in media, and I applaud the films that do it correctly, like "To All the Boys. The difference with this film is that it begins immediately with the bullying, with the "Chugga Chugga Chu Chu" picking and "the Chinese girl" label, but never does it delve into how Ellie Chu feels or show how she fights back. She is called "the Chinese girl" but we don"t know why that"s problematic to Ellie, since we don"t see her complain or stand up for herself. As an Asian American, I know why it is problematic, but perhaps other viewers may not understand. The most Ellie does to show her feelings in the film is to look bewildered or slightly flustered, but we never see real emotion or any sort of character growth in terms of adjusting to the identity of Asian American. The story is different in "To All the Boys" where we see Lara Jean connect to her Korean heritage, but doesn"t explore the racism or discrimination of being Asian American, because the story simply wanted representation. I think that being Asian American is a significant theme. This leaf cannot be opened and left hanging.
Similarly, The Half of It" opened up another leaf about being LGBTQ, when Ellie explores her feelings for Aster. However, this exploration is on a surface level, since Ellie doesn"t spend much time thinking about her and spends most of her time helping her friend, Paul Munsky, swindle his way to Aster"s heart. The point of contention is near the end, when Paul discovers that Ellie likes Aster and immediately tells her that it"s a sin according to the Bible. They stop talking, but Paul later makes up with Aster when he learns that there"s "more than one way to love." During this extremely brief interlude, Ellie doesn"t show much emotion aside from being lonely. She doesn"t show any internal struggle about realizing she"s gay or that her friend just told her that she"s a sinner. In a span of minutes, Paul realizes Ellie likes Aster, Googles the meaning of being gay, and makes up with Ellie in church. In my opinion, this story isn"t done justice if it"s going to try to open up about the struggle of being gay, especially in an evangelical community. At the end, Aster and Ellie make up, and Aster says that she will probably learn that she is "different" in a few years. What does she mean by being "different" If she means being "different" means being gay, she isn"t really understanding the process of coming to terms with being gay and is saying that being gay is "different" rather than the same kind of love. We are trying to stray away from the characterization of being gay as "different" but the film subtly refutes that. Finally, Ellie runs over and kisses Aster, and Aster smiles. I saw this scene as a weak excuse to resolve the LGBTQ plot.
The last large piece of issue in the story is how it dealt with the platonic relationship between Ellie and Paul. For the most part, I thought their friendship was sweet, even until the end. However, there was one scene that leaves a bruise in this "platonic" relationship, which was the scene in which Paul tried to kiss Ellie. There are several holes around this scene. First, we don"t know why Paul kissed her. There doesn"t seem to be any buildup towards Paul realizing that he likes Ellie in that way. Second, we don"t see this issue get resolved. After he tried to kiss her, he doesn"t apologize or explain his behavior, and they don"t talk about why they should stay friends or what the meaning of the "kiss" was. It simply seemed like it was there to set up Aster"s misunderstanding, Ellie"s denial and Paul"s realization of Ellie"s gayness. This kind of scene would put a dent to any platonic relationship, yet it didn"t seem to be an issue for Ellie and Paul"s. As a result, the viewers are left confused about Paul"s feelings, and their friendship isn"t really platonic.
"The Half of It" attempted to include too many sub-plots that sidetracked the story and undermined important identities like being gay and being Asian American. As a result, it ruined its chance to being a redeeming story for these identities and was rather a weak attempt and reaching a more diverse audience. However, the film mostly does a good job at demonstrating Paul and Ellie"s friendship aside from the kiss scene, and does explore the identity of being a low-income, first-generation immigrant. "The Half of It" s failure does not mean that it is impossible to make a film encompassing these themes. If the film was redone by rethinking how Ellie deals with her identity, it would make for a more compelling watch. It can still be a cheesy, Netflix original teen movie, but these identities need to be more mulled over if they are going to be used for the benefit of making a movie with original content.

The storyline is about a cute love story. Not like the cliché stories that they come up with nowadays. It"s different. The story revolves around a chinese girl Ellie Chu who runs a business in high school by writing essays for everyone for money. She is not a famous kid. Professor"s love her though. She is befriended by Paul who tries to write a romantic love letter to Aster who is the most beautiful girl in the school. Ellie helps Paul to come close to Aster by writing letters and messages to her on Paul"s behalf. But in the end Ellie blurted out that she was the one writing those letters indirectly when Moose proposes to Aster in Church to marry him. Next we realize that Ellie is actually in love with Aster.
I would have loved it more if it would have been a little more engaging. The movie goes very slow and some might as well stop watching it mid way. I just loved the concept. I"d not mind watching it but to give a true idea of the movie it seems a little turn off for people whom I know.
